First Time at Hartsfield-Jackson?

The world's busiest airport can feel overwhelming. Here's everything you need to know before you arrive — laid out in plain language.

If this is your first time flying through Hartsfield-Jackson, the most important thing to know is the scale. ATL is the busiest passenger airport in the world, with 100+ million travelers passing through every year and more than 2,500 daily flights. The airport is laid out as a long parallel bar of seven concourses (T at the east end, A through F running west) connected by an underground automated train called the Plane Train. Knowing your concourse and gate before you arrive will save you significant stress.

Concourse T is connected directly to the Domestic Terminal — no Plane Train ride is required. If your boarding pass shows a gate starting with T (T1, T7, T15, etc.), you simply clear security and walk to your gate. Every other concourse (A, B, C, D, E, F) requires either a 2-12 minute Plane Train ride or a 5-25 minute walk via the above-ground walkway.

International flights at ATL operate from Concourses E and F. Concourse F is connected to the separate Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, which has its own check-in, security, and ground transportation. If you're flying internationally, check whether your airline operates from the Domestic Terminal (Delta international flights are often handled from the International Terminal but not always) or the International Terminal directly.

Security wait times vary dramatically. The morning peak (5-7 a.m.) and Sunday afternoons can see standard security lines of 30-60 minutes. TSA PreCheck cuts this to 5-15 minutes. CLEAR (a separate paid service) cuts it further. If you fly even occasionally, both are worth the membership cost.

For ground transportation, MARTA (Atlanta's heavy rail system) is the cheapest and often the fastest way to/from downtown. The MARTA station is integrated into the Domestic Terminal — no shuttle required. Trains run every 12-20 minutes from approximately 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., and the fare is $2.50 with a Breeze Card. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) is the most convenient option but can run $30-60 to most metro Atlanta destinations, more during surge pricing.

Plan to arrive 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. This includes time for parking/transportation, check-in (especially if checking bags), security, and walking to your gate. With TSA PreCheck and no checked bags, you can comfortably reduce this to 90 minutes for domestic and 2 hours for international.
