2-Hour ATL Layover Guide

A 2-hour layover at Hartsfield-Jackson is achievable but requires discipline. Most of your time will be spent on the practicalities of connecting: deplaning, walking or riding the Plane Train to your departure concourse, and getting through any required security re-screening.

Domestic-to-domestic connections are the simplest. After deplaning, walk to the central spine corridor or take the Plane Train to your departure concourse. Allow 25–30 minutes including the train ride and walking time. That leaves 60–75 minutes for food and gate arrival.

International arrivals at E or F require U.S. Customs processing on the lower level — this typically takes 25–45 minutes including baggage recheck, longer during peak periods. After clearing CBP, you'll re-enter the secure area through a dedicated checkpoint and proceed to your domestic departure. Plan on the full 2 hours being consumed by this process.

Best food choices for a 2-hour window: grab-and-go from Atlanta Bread, Sweet Auburn BBQ, or any of the Starbucks/Dunkin' coffee bars. Avoid sit-down restaurants — even One Flew South, the airport's best restaurant, requires at least 45 minutes for a satisfying meal.

If your layover is between flights at the same concourse, the math improves significantly. A T-to-T connection involves only a short walk; an A-to-A connection within the same concourse can be done in under 15 minutes. In these cases, you may have 90+ minutes of effective free time.
