6-Hour ATL Layover Guide
Long layover — consider leaving the airport for a quick downtown excursion via MARTA.
A 6-hour layover at Hartsfield-Jackson is long enough that staying at the airport starts to feel claustrophobic. The good news: ATL is one of the most transit-accessible airports in the U.S., with MARTA's Gold and Red Lines providing a direct rail connection to downtown Atlanta in 20 minutes.
Recommended off-airport itinerary: MARTA from the airport to Five Points (downtown Atlanta) in 20 minutes. Walk 10 minutes to the Centennial Olympic Park area for the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, or the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Spend 2–2.5 hours at one of these attractions, plus a meal at a downtown restaurant. MARTA back to the airport in 20 minutes. Allow 90 minutes from arrival back at the airport to departure to comfortably navigate security and reach your gate.
If you prefer to stay airside: the Concourse A or B Sky Clubs (or The Club ATL) can comfortably fill 4 hours with a meal, shower, work session, and quiet zone time. Bring a book or laptop — the lounges have reliable Wi-Fi and quiet seating.
International arrivals must clear CBP and re-enter the secure area, which takes 30–60 minutes. From there, the same options apply — though leaving the airport for 6 hours is more practical with no immigration to worry about.
Don't underestimate the time required to re-enter the secure area at ATL. Even with TSA PreCheck, re-clearing security can take 15–25 minutes during peak periods. Plan to be back at the security checkpoint at least 90 minutes before your departure.
