Can I bring musical instruments through ATL security?

Yes — musical instruments are allowed through TSA security. Smaller instruments fit in carry-on space; larger instruments may require gate-checking.

Musical instruments are allowed through TSA security at Hartsfield-Jackson. Smaller instruments (violins, flutes, piccolos, harmonicas) fit easily in carry-on space. Mid-size instruments (acoustic guitars, electric bass, soprano saxophones) may fit in overhead bins on most aircraft.

Larger instruments (cellos, double basses, baritone saxophones, French horns) typically require either gate-checking, purchasing a separate seat for the instrument (cellos and similar), or shipping ahead. Each airline has specific size and weight restrictions; check with your airline 48 hours before your flight.

Hard cases provide significantly better protection than soft cases, especially for gate-checked instruments. Loosen string tension before flying to compensate for cabin pressure changes that can stress instruments during ascent and descent.

TSA may inspect instrument cases at security checkpoints. Carrying a copy of any insurance documentation and a contact for instrument repair (if damage occurs in transit) is recommended for valuable instruments.
